Regaining momentum after the First World War
The end of the First World War did not result in things returning to normal right away for DEME’s founders. The loss of their fleet had a severe impact, and much of the international activity that had defined the pre-war years was disrupted.
However, rather than retreat, the founders adapted to the new realities of the post war period. Drawing on hard-earned experience, trusted partnerships, and the strength of their people, they gradually restarted operations closer to home. In Belgium, dredging and port works resumed, which included maintenance on the Scheldt River and in the Port of Antwerp, which were essential efforts to restore maritime access in a recovering post-war economy.
These early post-war years marked a quiet but decisive turning point for DEME. Despite recording significant losses, the founders never gave up and instead laid the foundations for a renewed phase of activity.
